CHAPEL HILL – Four student-athletes from Greater Hickory area conferences are among 35 who will be honored by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA).
The NCHSAA has announced its “Heart of a Champion” award winners for the school year.
Those selected include:
— From the Northwestern Foothills 2A, Colby McHargue of West Iredell and Nicole Rhyne of West Iredell.
— From the Northwestern 3A-4A, Brooke Byrd and Jacob Watson from Watauga.
The sportsmanship recognition is part of a program offered by the NCHSAA Student Services Division. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, there won’t be a luncheon this year.
The award winners will be honored through the NCHSAA’s social media and online platforms in addition to receiving the awards.
Each NCHSAA member schools had an opportunity to nominate one male and one female student-athlete for recognition. The students must have participated in at least one varsity sport or activity, including cheerleading, during the 2019-2020 school year, have not been ejected from any contest, and must have demonstrated outstanding citizenship and sportsmanship during their high school careers.
