MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Lenoir-Rhyne men chase 12th win in home game Saturday against Mars Hill

Lenoir-Rhyne University’s men will try to reach a dozen wins when they play Mars Hill at home on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.

The Bears got their 11th win on Wednesday, winning 67-64 on the road over Wingate to improve to 5-1 on the road this season.

Cory Thomas led the Bears’ victory, hitting five of his nine field goal attempts to score 13 points. He added six rebounds and making five steals as LRU (11-3, 4-2) dropped Wingate to 9-6 overall and 5-2 in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC).

Djibril Diallo of LRU, held to a season-low five points, had 10 rebounds while Jon Jean added 12 points, five rebounds and four assists. Jean scored nine points in the first half and hit two 3-pointers.

The Bears held Wingate’s Marco Haskins to 11 points on 5-of-16 shooting. Freddie Jackson had 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead Wingate, which was held to its lowest scoring output of the season.

LRU won after the Bulldogs had a 3-point shot hit off the front of the rim at the buzzer.

The Bears’ defense made a key play with 22 seconds to go. Ahead by three points, a bad pass gave Wingate the ball. Thomas made a steal as the Bulldogs tried to make an outlet pass.

LRU held Wingate to 6-of-24 shooting on 3-pointers, the Bulldogs worst percentage of the season.
