MAIDEN – Maiden High’s star quarterback is headed to N.C. State, hoping his next football game will be with the Wolfpack.
Ethan Rhodes (6-foot-3, 202 pounds) — who threw for more than 6,000 yards in three seasons for the Blue Devils — has announced he has accepted an offer to be an preferred walk-on for the Wolfpack.
Preferred walk-on status is not scholarship based but also differs from a player trying out for the team, as they are granted by the coaching staff to notable prospects.
Rhodes sparked Maiden to a Catawba Valley 2A Athletic title as a senior on a 13-1 team that won all seven of its league games.
He completed 67 percent of his passes (148 of 221) for 2,618 yards with 40 scoring passes and only four interceptions and added 13 rushes for 61 yards and eight TDs.
The Blue Devils went 9-4 in Rhodes’ sophomore year and 6-1 in his junior year that was shortened by COVID.
Overall, the Blue Devils won 18 of 20 league games and went 28-6 with Rhodes under center.
He finished with an average of 191.6 yards passing per game (6,323 yards in 33 games), threw for 80 TDs and completed 370 of 593 passes with 16 interceptions.
