Newton-Conover, Maiden head coaches selected for awards

The top players in Catawba Valley 2A Athletic basketball this season led teams to conference titles.
In voting by league head coaches, Cassidy Geddes led All-CVAC 2A girls’ picks and Malek Patterson of West Caldwell was selected as the best boys’ player.
Newton-Conover opens the state 2A playoffs at home Tuesday night, facing Black Mountain Owen.
West Caldwell’s first state 2A playoff game is Tuesday in Lenoir against East Gaston.
Coaching awards went to Sylvia White of Newton-Conover (girls) and Justin Brittain of Maiden (boys).
White guided the Red Devils to a regular-season and conference tournament title while Brittain’s team at Maiden shared a regular-season title with West Caldwell and fell in the league tournament title game against West Caldwell.
