GREENBORO – Catawba County’s best high school wrestlers left no doubt on Saturday about where the most dominant teams reside.
In what virtually became a three-team battle of conference foes (Catawba Valley 2A Athletic), Bandys won a state individual tournament championship by finishing in front of Bunker Hill and Newton-Conover, with league foe West Lincoln taking fifth.
The Trojans had 139.5 points to finish ahead of Bunker Hill (107) and Newton-Conover (103), and West Lincoln had 91 points.
In the 3A tournament, Fred T. Foard overpowered the field to win the crown. The Tigers scored 177 points with Central Academy next at 125.5.
Avery County won the state 1A title and Wilmington Laney won in 4A.
Six Catawba County wrestlers came home as state champions: Newton-Conover’s Owen Clark at 195 and Joseph Lioret-Tutty at 220 in 2A, Bryson Burkett (132) and Caleb Moore (160) in 2A, Bunker Hill’s Lawson Yang at 106 in 2A and Foard’s Dylan Smith at 220 in 3A.
Clark (51-2) and Lioret-Tutty (50-6) are juniors, Burkett (41-9) and Moore (48-2) are seniors, Yang (38-3) is a senior and Smith (46-1) is a junior.
Bandys, coached by Justin Adams, also won the state 2A dual-team championship while Fred T. Foard, coached by Mike Carey, was the state 3A dual-team champion.
