HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Benfield’s 5 TDs spark Freedom’s blowout of East Burke

ICARD – Freedom High quarterback Jayden Birchfield had a hand in five touchdowns on Monday night as the visiting Patriots cruised by East Burke 55-13, extending their win streak in Fat Friday games to nine.

Birchfield’s scores included a 58-yard TD pass to Desmond Caldwell to open the scoring in a game postponed by rain and lightning from Friday.

Freedom (2-1) will play again on Friday, facing Patton at home at 7:30 p.m. while East Burke (0-3) is at Newton0-Conover on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Birchfield also had scoring passes to Chase Childers and Christian Fox in the victory and ran 67 yards for a TD.

Freedom led 35-6 at the half en route to picking up career win No. 89 for new head coach Luke Little.

The Patriots upped their series lead in Fat Friday games to 27-18.

Friday’s game with Patton will finish Freedom’s non-league schedule. The Patriots are idle on Sept. 14 and open Northwestern 3A-4A play on Sept. 21 at St. Stephens.

East Burke, outscored 165-13 in three games, will play a non-league game on Sept. 14 at West Lincoln and then have an open date. The Cavs’ opener in the Northwestern Foothills 2A is Sept. 21 at West Iredell.
