RALEIGH – Shelby High — sparked by an early 93-interception return for a touchdown — won another state football title on Saturday.

The Golden Lions, the West No. 4 seed, beat East No. 1 seed North Davidson 42-21 at N.C. State in the 2AA final to bring home a state title for the fifth time in six years.

Shelby fell in the 2017 West 2AA title game to Hibriten, which denied the Golden Lions a shot at their fifth straight state title (Hibriten then won the championship).

Shelby, finishing 13-3, won its last 12 games after a 1-3 start. That run included beating Hibriten 28-21 on the road to earn a berth in Saturday’s championship game.

North Davidson finished 13-3.
