HICKORY – Catawba Valley Community College opened its men’s basketball season Wednesday night by beating the Brevard College junior varsity 70-59.

Prior to the tipoff, the Red Hawks honored head coach Bryan Garmroth for having reached milestone coaching wins.

CVCC athletic director Nicholas Schroder presented Garmroth with a special plaque that recognized the coach’s 100th CVCC victory – last January 25, 106-82 over Vance-Granville Community College – and his 250th win as a junior college head coach when CVCC downed Guilford Tech 88-71 on Jan. 11 of last season.

The Red Hawks won the season-opener of Garmroth’s seventh season at CVCC behind sophomores Caleb Bryson and Steve Ruszala. Both players scored 11 points.

CVCC led 21-8 near the midpoint of the first half, but the Tornados (0-1) rallied to within 40-31 by halftime.

Leading 50-43 in the early stages of the second half, the Red Hawks used a 20-6 late in the half — including six points from Matthew Gray and five points from Bryson – to close out the victory.

CVCC’s next game is Saturday at 3 p.m., a home non-conference battle with Spartanburg Methodist.
