MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: CVCC rolls on Sophomore Day, picks up 21st win

HICKORY – Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) cruised on Sophomore Day in the Tarlton Complex on Saturday, downing Fayetteville Tech 93-66 in men’s basketball.

The Red Hawks (21-8, 13-7 Region X) have tied for the second-most wins in a season in school history and next play in the Region X/District O tournament.

Pairings for the tournament have not been determined but the Red Hawks anticipate having a home game on March 4.

Cole Johnson paced the Red Hawks with a team-high 18 points, including four 3-pointers. CVCC hit 11 3-pointers with Everett Palmer and Zach De La Cruz making three each.

Behind a tenacious defense and fast-paced offense, CVCC led 48-21 by halftime after Johnson scored 15 points.

Fayetteville Tech (14-15, 7-13) pulled within 16 points in the second half.

CVCC sophomore forward Jordan Powell scored all 10 of his points in the second half.

The Red Hawks had four players in double figures – Powell, Johnson, Palmer (13 points) and Dezure Moulden (10 points).

CVCC 95, Patrick Henry 70 (Thursday)

The Red Hawks reached 20 wins with a home victory behind a career-high 21 points by freshman Sal-Bey Young, who also grabbed 10 rebounds.

CVCC had last reached 20 wins in a season in 2015-16.

The Red Hawks erased n 18-15 deficit with a 9-0 run and led 38-31 at the half.

Young and Jahleer Black each scored nine first-half points for CVCC.

CVCC held the Patriots (11-14, 7-12) to five points in the first five minutes, 37 seconds of the second half.

A four-minute stretch in which the Red Hawks had a 19-10 put the game out of reach for the Patriots.

Powell had 14 of his 17 points in the second half and Young scored 13.

Tankey Williams scored 19 points to pace Patrick Henry with Anthony Taylor adding 16 points and Jaylen Dillard scoring 13.
