MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: CVCC nips CCC&TI, wins sixth game of season

HUDSON – Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC), off to its best start since 2012-13, picked up a key men’s basketball victory Wednesday night by beating rival Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute (CCC&TI) 90-82 on the road.

CVCC (6-1) had five players in double figures — led by sophomore forward Jordan Powell with 16 points – with freshmen Zach De La Cruz (15), Dezure Moulden (14) and Sal-Bey Young (12) and sophomore Everett Palmer (14) joining him in double digits.

CCC&TI led 37-32 at the half after it hit shot 16 first-half free throws to the Red Hawks’ four. CCC&TI hit 10 free throws and CVCC converted three.

CVCC ended up making 15 of 24 free throws and the Cobras made 21 of 41.

The Cobras beat the Red Hawks 68-63 on Nov.7 in Hickory when CVCC missed 25 free throws.

A late rally carried the Red Hawks to victory this time. They grabbed their first lead with five minutes, 45 seconds to play on a 3-pointer by De La Cruz.

De La Cruz had five 3-pointers, four in the second half, and Palmer had two of his three 3-pointers in the second half.

CVCC’s 58-point second half was a season-high.

The Red Hawks are idle until Wednesday when they will open Region X play with a 7 p.m. game in the Tarlton Complex against Davidson Community College.
