NEWTON – The first Oldies 103.3 FM WNNC Coca-Cola Golden Helmet award winner for the 2019 high school football season is Brandon Johnson of Newton-Conover.

Johnson, a junior, sparked the Red Devils’ 44-14 home victory on Friday night over Bunker Hill with three touchdowns in the first six minutes of the game.

On Newton-Conover’s second play from scrimmage, he caught a short pass on the left sideline from quarterback Justice Craig and went 50 yards for a TD.

On defense, he had a 38-yard fumble return, scooping it up after a fumble by a Bunker Hill receiver, and he scored about four minutes later on a 26-yard interception return.

Unofficially, Johnson had 155 kick return yards, including averaging 21 yards on five punt returns.
