LENOIR – West Caldwell High will not field a junior varsity football team this season.

After cancelling non-league games against West Iredell and Ashe County and having an open date this week, the Warriors were scheduled to start their Northwestern 3A-4A schedule next Thursday night at home against Alexander Central.

In an email update with HobbsDailyReport.com on Friday morning, West Caldwell athletic director Stephen McMasters confirmed the Warriors won’t play their seven-game conference JV football.

McMasters earlier said the school was reviewing whether it felt it could play at least its conference JV games, but Friday morning said the Warriors just don’t have enough players to move forward.

He said West Caldwell has 15 players available but most of them are linemen. Many of the younger players in the program are playing varsity, where the Warriors are 0-4 heading into next Friday’s conference opener at Alexander Central (7:30 p.m.).
