BOONE – The Watauga High girls and boys captured Northwestern 3A-4A track and field championships on their own track on Wednesday.
The Pioneers’ girls scored 224 points to finish ahead of Alexander Central (185) while the Watauga boys nipped Alexander Central 151-143 ½.
Sophia Ritter and Emma Brown led the Watauga girls by winning the 1,600 and 3,200 and 100 and 300 hurdles, respectively.
Madison Ratchford won the discus and Chesney Price won the pole vault to lead Alexander Central.
Freedom’s Kayla Avery won twice – in the 100 and 200 – and Marissa Shalk of St. Stephens won the triple jump and long jump.
The Watauga boys were led by Luke Drummonds, who won the 300 hurdles, the pole vault and the triple jump.
Cooper Castellaw had three wins for Alexander Central – in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 – and teammate Lyndon Strickland landed titles in the shot put and discus.
A’keem Patterson led St. Stephens with a victory in the 100 and a second-place finish in the 200.
