HICKORY – St. Stephens High will have a new varsity girls’ basketball coach next season, its fourth in eight years.

The position was posted on the Catawba County Schools open jobs list on Tuesday. The post said the position will be open until filled.

St. Stephens athletic director Billy Baker was not available for comment.

The Indians had two head coaches last season when they finished 2-23 overall and 0-12 in the Northwestern 3A-4A.

Andy Bennett replaced Roger Shield after Shield resigned after St. Stephens’ ninth game of the season, a 53-44 loss to Draughn. The Indians were 2-7 at that point and lost all 16 games with Bennett as head coach.

Bennett also continued as head junior varsity boys’ basketball coach last season at St. Stephens.

Shield, 22-36 with the Indians, replaced Betsy Reynolds as head coach in 2017-18. She coached for four years with three teams reaching the state playoffs.

The Indians are 7-42 in the last two years, that coming after a five-year stretch in which they went 67-62.
