Watauga High, after winning conference titles in four fall sports in the Northwestern 3A-4A, won two top athlete awards in the league and has three Coach of the Year award winners.

In voting my conference coaches, the Pioneers’ Rebekah Farthing (volleyball, offense), Sophia Ritter (girls cross country) and Price St. Clair (boys cross country) won conference Player of the Year awards.

Watauga head coaches winning Coach of the Year awards were Carol Almond in girls tennis and Randy McDonough (both cross country awards).

The Pioneers won conference titles in girls’ tennis, volleyball, girls’ cross country and boys’ cross country.

Destyne Wimbush of Hickory was named the girls’ tennis player of the year while Avery Jackson of St. Stephens won Defensive Player of the Year in volleyball.

Hickory’s Anna McDonald, the medalist in all six conference girls’ golf matches this season, won player of the year in her sport.

Jason Stephens of Hickory was named volleyball coach of the year after guiding the Red Tornadoes to a second place finish.

Rob Scott, who led Freedom to a second place finish in girls’ golf, won coach of the year in that sport.

Conference officials will release All-Northwestern 3A-4A football awards — as they traditionally do — when all of the league teams in the state playoffs have completed their seasons.
