COLLEGE BASEBALL: Catawba Valley Community College names 4 captains for spring

HICKORY – Two pitchers, a catcher-outfielder and a third basemen will lead Catawba Valley Community College’s baseball team as captains during the spring season.

Pitchers Julian Smith of Concord and Hunter Isaacs of Boone are among the four captains selected in a vote by their teammates to lead the Red Hawks this season, the school announced Tuesday.

Daniel Brinegar, a two-position player from Elkin, and third baseman Graham Mitchell of Greenville, S.C., are also Red Hawks captains.

CVCC’s spring season begins Feb. 10 at 1 p.m. in a home doubleheader against the Piedmont International junior varsity team.

The Red Hawks’ home game are played at Henkel-Alley Field, home of the Hickory Post 48 Legion baseball team, at the Catawba County Fairgrounds in Newton.

“We take the naming of our captains very seriously here,” said fourth-year CVCC head baseball coach Paul Rozzelle. “They have been put in this position by their peers in how they carry themselves on and off the field as well as their level of play. We are very excited to watch these guys lead by example.”

Smith, a left-hander, recently committed to N.C. State. Coming off Tommy John surgery last year, his fastball touched 94 miles per hour during his first outing during the fall season.

A right-handed starter from Watauga High, Isaacs improved his command and ability to throw strikes during the fall schedule. He gave up just one run in more than 10 innings pitched.

Brinegar, a red-shirt sophomore, played in 31 games last spring. He hit .370 and three home runs, drove in 14 RBIs, scored 24 runs and stole six bases.

A red-shirt sophomore, Mitchell batted .316 last spring with five home runs, 34 RBIs, 21 runs scored and two stolen bases in 45 games.
