McDowell pitchers share Pitcher of Year after Titans win league title

A junior pitcher who led St. Stephens High to the third round of the state 3A playoffs was named the Northwestern 3A-4A’s Player of the Year on Wednesday.

The league’s head coaches voted Julien Peissel of St. Stephens as the conference’s top player, McDowell aces Dusty Revis and Chapel Matson as Pitchers of the Year and McDowell’s Alex Smith as Coach of the Year.

The Titans won the regular season title, going 10-1, and they were eliminated in the third round of the state playoffs by Winston-Salem Reagan.

St. Stephens, after a second-place league finish (8-3), was knocked out of the 3A bracket by Sun Valley.

Peissel went 5-1 this season, pitching in seven games. He had an ERA of 0.20 with 45 strikeouts in 34 2/3 innings pitched with highs of 10 against Alexander Central and Freedom.

Revis, a senior, went 6-0 this season with an ERA of 1.89. He pitched 40 2/3 innings, striking out 68. He had 12 strikeouts in a game against Alexander Central and 13 against Freedom.

Matson, a senior, went 5-1 with an ERA of 1.74. He threw 44 1/3 innings, striking out 41, and closed his career at 11-3 with a 2.67 ERA with 88 strikeouts in 78 2/3 innings.

Smith completed his 12th season as head coach at McDowell. The Titans’ only regular season loss was 2-1 to South Caldwell in Marion on May 5.

After the loss to the Spartans, the Titans reeled off 10 straight wins and then beat Olympic and Porter Ridge in the first two rounds of the state 4A playoffs.

Smith’s unofficial record at McDowell improved to 143-121.
