CHAPEL HILL – Hickory High fielded three athletic teams in 2017-18 with team grade points averages in the top three in the state.
In a press release on Friday, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) reported the Red Tornadoes had the best GPA in falls sports in boys’ cross country (3.877) and in winter sports in boys’ outdoor track (3.858), plus second-best in girls’ outdoor track (3.900).
Watauga’s girls’ golf team was second-highest (3.92).
Weddington was a state leader with five of its athletic teams ranking No. 1 in GPA – including its football team — and four others finishing in the top three.
The N.C. School of Science in Math had six teams in the top three with one at No. 1.
The NCHSAA’s Sholar Athlete Program is sponsored by the Governor’s Highway Safety Program’s “Click It or Ticket” initiative and provides certificates of recognition to individual students as well as teams that meet the qualification standards.
For individuals to qualify, they must have a 3.5 weighted GPA or higher during the semester under consideration, and for a team to qualify it must have a combined unweighted GPA of 3.1 or higher during the semester of competition.
The NCHSAA presented a plaque and a cash award to the top team in each sport, based on unweighted team GPA, at its annual meeting ($250 for first, $150 for second and $100 for third).
