HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Red Devils’ Johnson says he will play at Duke

NEWTON – Brandon Johnson, a top receiver and defensive back last season for an eight-win team at Newton-Conover High, announced this week he will play college football at Duke.

Johnson (5-foot-10, 175 pounds) revealed his decision in a video he posted on twitter on his mother’s birthday (https://twitter.com/i/status/1258164531626467332). He indicated he also received offers or considered, in no particular order: Wake Forest, N.C. State, East Carolina, Appalachian State, Charlotte, Northwestern, Tennessee and Army.

Last season, he had 36 solo tackles and 13 assists, three interceptions and two fumble recoveries on defense.

Johnson closed with 1,113 all-purpose yards last year, catching 38 passes for 662 yards to average 50.9 per game. He had six of the Red Devils’ 21 receiving scores a year ago.
