The South Fork 2A has released a list of its senior athletes for spring sports, awarding each a Courage Award.

Each of the conference’s eight schools will receive a plaque listing its senior student-athletes in baseball, girls’ golf, softball, girls’ soccer, boys’ tennis and girls’ and boys’ track and field, all of whom had their seasons cut short by the coronavirus pandemic.

Conference athletic directors made this decision at the South Fork 2A’s final league meeting of the year, Conference Administrator Butch Parker said in a press release.

“With the circumstances that the Covid-19 Pandemic placed those student-athletes in, they have shown exemplary courage and dedication, as they continued working out and practicing on their own, for the possible return to action,” Parker said in the release.

“Unfortunately, their season was canceled, due to no fault of their own, denying them a conclusion of their high school athletic career. The South Fork Conference is proud of all these young men and women for being a vibrant member of athletic teams for the past four years.”

Retiring AD at Lincolnton honored

Conference officials recognized the contributions of Cole Sigmon, coach at athletic director at Lincolnton.

They also honored Matt Schlegel of Lake Norman Charter, who served this school year as conference president.

Next school year is scheduled to be the final one for the South Fork 2A, and the league president for the year will be Newton-Conover athletic director John Echerd.

Conference proceeds split

League officials also elected not to wait until the end of the fourth year of the conference – as has been traditional – to split the conference’s Athletics General Fund.

Each of the schools will receive $4,000 from the league treasury to help with financial losses due to the pandemic.

The move to distribute the funds early was, in part, because of the conference’s corporate sponsor, Lake Electric of Maiden.
