HAYDEN DEAL (Class A Rome, Ga.)

Former Bandys High star Hayden Deal, a left-handed relief pitcher for the Braves (34-22), did not pitch on Sunday when Rome edged visiting Columbia (S.C.) 5-3 before 1,737.

Deal had a big game on Friday night, when the Braves beat the Fireflies 7-1 in Rome. He came on in relief of Mike Soroka — with Rome on a rehab assignment from the Atlanta Braves – in the fourth inning with two outs and threw three innings to earn a victory.

He gave up two hits, no runs, walked two and struck out three before a crowd of 2,092.

Deal threw exactly half of his 62 pitches for strikes and faced 15 batters.

He is 4-0 this season with an ERA of 1.85, pitching 24 1/3 innings, giving up 18 hits, six runs (five earned), walking seven, hitting two batters and striking out 35.

Deal’s wins have all come in his last 10 games, when his ERA is 1.27 and he’s walked six and struck out 32 over his last 21 1/3 innings.

He’s now pitched 55 innings in pro baseball and struck out 62.

HUNTER HARVEY (Class AA Bowie, Md.)

Hunter Harvey — a former Bandys High star who was called up to the Baltimore Orioles for two games earlier in the season – did not pitch on Sunday. The Baysox’s home games against Trenton (N.J.) was rained out.

Harvey had a tough night on Friday in his ninth start of the season. He went two innings, gave up five hits and six runs (all earned), walked one and struck out none with Trenton winning 7-2.

Harvey faced 12 batters and threw strikes on 36 of his 59 pitches but gave up a double, triple and two home runs.

Harvey is 1-2 this season with 32 1/3 innings pitched. He’s allowed 36 hits, 20 (all earned), walked eight and struck out 30. His ERA is 5.57.

He has been pitching every fifth game for the Baysox. If he does that this week, his next start would likely come on Saturday (6:05 p.m.) or Sunday (1:35 p.m.) at New Hampshire.

If Sunday’s rainout factors in – and/or Harvey were to pitch based on numbers of days of rest before throwing again — he could start in a series at Portland (Ore.) that is Tuesday through Thursday.
