MAIDEN – Falling behind by six runs early led to Maiden Post 240’s first American Legion baseball loss of the season on Monday night.
Gastonia Post 23 won 9-6 at Maiden High by scoring at least one run in the first six innings and collecting 11 hits.
The loss dropped Maiden — off to the best start in program history — to 5-1.
The Salamanders are idle on Tuesday and then play a doubleheader on Wednesday against Belmont Post 144/266 with a 5:30 p.m. start at Belmont Abbey College.
Gastonia (3-3, 2-2) scored a run in the first inning and four more in the second inning to get Maiden down 5-0.
A run in the top of the third inning made it 6-0 before Post 240 scored in the bottom of the inning.
Gastonia made it 7-1 with another run in the top of the fourth inning but Maiden scored in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-2.
After Gastonia went up 8-2 with a run in the top of the fifth, the Salamanders scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to get within 8-6.
Gastonia had a run in the top of the sixth inning, and Heath Griffis earned a save.
Maiden left 11 men on base and had nine hits while Gastonia left nine men on base and had 11 hits.
Fermin Osio had three hits and an RBI for Gastonia, with Tyler Bradley adding two doubles and an RBI, Austin Mitchell going 2-for-3 and driving in two runs. and Hank Thomason going 2-4 with two RBIs.
Starter Slayton Fletcher, who pitched four innings (three hits, two runs, six walks, two strikeouts), gained a win for Post 23.
For Maiden, Ty Williams was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Brantley Durham went 2-for-4. Mac Beam, Ryan Lyda, Jarrett Isaac and Grayeson Brown each added an RBI.
Right-hander Bryson Ledford took the loss, starting and going two-thirds of an inning. He gave up four hits, three runs (all earned) and had no walks and no strikeouts. He was the first of six pitchers used by Post 240 head coach David Williams.
After playing at Belmont on Wednesday, Post 240 will be idle until June 14’s home game at 7 p.m. against Mint Hill.
