LEGION BASEBALL: Cherryville snaps Hickory’s win streak at 3 games

CHERRYVILLE – Robbie Cowie threw five innings, and Cherryville Post 100 rode a four-run second inning to a 10-3 American Legion baseball win Monday night over visiting Hickory Post 48.

Hickory (4-5) has won three straight games coming into a battle at Cherryville High, and Post 100 improved to 6-2, 2-1.

Dayne Homesley had a two-run triple and Luke Kiser and Brett Eury each had a run-scoring single in the second inning for Cherryville.

Cowie, a right-hander who pitched at Lincolnton High, grabbed a win.

All of Post 100’s runs in the second inning were unearned and put Hickory down 4-0.

Jacob Fuller had a bases-loaded double in a three-run fourth inning as Pot 48 closed within 4-3.

Hickory left the tying runs on base in the sixth inning, and Cherryville scored five runs in the bottom of the inning to blow it open.

Bryson Smith took the loss for Hickory, which next plays on Thursday. Post 48 meets the Gaston Braves at 7 p.m. at South Point High in Belmont.

Hickory then has a busy week next week, starting with a Prep Baseball Report event at the Legion Fairgrounds in Newton at 4 p.m. on Monday.

On Tuesday and Thursday, Hickory plays Lincoln County – Tuesday at 7 p.m. at East Lincoln High and Thursday at 7 p.m. at Henkel-Alley Field at the Fairgrounds.

Weekend games on June 16 and 17 are a home doubleheader against Burnsville (2 p.m.) on June 16 and a 7 p.m. home game on June 17 against Mocksville.

Post 48 is 3-2 at Henkel-Alley this season and 1-3 in road games.

NEWTON — Hickory Post 48 rides a three-game win streak into Cherryville on Monday night after sweeping a home doubleheader on Sunday over Henderson County.

Post 48 won the first game at Henkel-Alley Field at the Legion Fairgrounds 3-2 and took the night cap 9-3 to improve to 4-4.

Eli Moser pitched 6 1/3 innings, checking Henderson County on two earned runs, and Luke Durham picked up a save in the first game.

Moser drove in two runs for Hickory and Carrington Chapman, Pierson Hanvey and Kevin Shuford each had hits and scored for Post 48.

In the second game, Hickory batted around in the fourth inning and scored eight runs to break open a game it led early 1-0.

The big at-bat came after a weather delay of an hour.

Hanvey was the winning pitcher, throwing five scoreless innings, and Bryce Stober had two hits for Post 48.

Hickory’s game on Monday night is at 7 p.m. at Cherryville High, where Post 100 had back-to-back games washed out by rain on Saturday (against Burke County) and on Sunday (against Maiden).

Post 48’s other game this week comes Thursday at South Point High (7 p.m.) against the Gaston Braves.
