MAIDEN – Maiden High is making plans to honor one of the best varsity football teams in school history.

The school’s athletic department is inviting all members of the 1971 football team and the cheerleading squad to a game on Oct. 8 against Bandys.

Maiden’s 1971 football team went 10-1-2, defeating Oak Hill 22-12 in Morganton, Edneyville 14-0 at Maiden and Mount Pleasant 6-2 at Newton-Conover’s Gurley Stadium.

The Blue Devils were Western North Carolina champions (at that time the North Carolina High School Athletic Association did not have state title games).

The 50th reunion of that team’s accomplishments will begin with a Meet and Greet at 6 p.m. on Oct. 8 at the side entrance to the varsity gym.

A special section of seating for team members and families will be marked off at the stadium for the game. The team will be honored at halftime.

The night will also we to honor the memory of beloved head coach Tom Brown, who died on Feb. 25.

All of the team members are requested to RSVP to Butch Parker, who played on the 1971 team, at butch_parker@catawbaschools.net by Sept. 30.
