MAIDEN – Wet field conditions that have been so bad that Maiden High officials haven’t been able to get on the baseball field to address them has caused the Blue Devils to alter their schedule through at least late March.

Maiden athletic director Caine Houser said Monday the large volume of rain this year has impacted on the Blue Devils’ outfield — which sits in a slight bowl — and he described field conditions as “dirt turned to muck and it doesn’t dry fast.”

“At this time,” Houser said, “we can’t get on it to top dress it but that’s our plan when it stops raining.”

Houser said Maiden should still be able to get all of its home games in.

Working with other South Fork 2A teams, the Blue Devils have altered their schedule to have their seven conference games at home. That meant trading playing dates and having their first seven league games on the road.

“At this time, I am just hoping we get some days without rain so we can get a tractor on the field to start the top dressing,” Houser said.

Maiden currently doesn’t have a home game scheduled until playing Newton-Conover in a South Fork 2A game on March 29.

The Blue Devils’ first game new head coach Doug McRee was last Wednesday on the road, a 10-0 loss to Lincoln Charter.

Maiden’s game at Bunker Hill last Friday was postponed, leaving Tuesday’s game conference opener at Newton-Conover as the next game.

Additional changes

Bandys: The Trojans have traded home playing dates with Lake Norman Charter and will be at Bandys for a 7 p.m. game on Tuesday.

The return date will have Bandys playing at Lake Norman Charter on March 29.

In a preseason poll of conference head coaches conducted by The Gaston Gazette, North Lincoln and Bandys were picked to finish first and second, respectively.

Hickory: The Red Tornadoes’ Northwestern 3A-4A opener at home against Freedom has been moved from Tuesday to Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

In order to play Freedom on Wednesday, Hickory moved a home game scheduled against Newton-Conover to March 27.

North Lincoln: The start time for the Knights’ South Fork 2A opener against visiting Lincolnton Tuesday has been moved up to 5 p.m.
