SHELBY – Garrison Burress’ grand slam powered South Caldwell High to third place on Thursday in the Shelby Easter baseball tournament.

The Spartans won 6-3 over Burns to go 2-1 in a round robin event at Shelby High.

South Caldwell improved to 14-4-1 and the Spartans are 9-3 in the Northwestern 3A-4A and in second place, two games back of Fred T. Foard.

The Northwestern 3A-4A plays a 14-game schedule, so Foard has already locked up at least a share of the regular season title.

South Caldwell is four games up on the league’s only other 4A team, Watauga, and has grabbed the conference’s top 4A playoff seed.

The Spartans’ remaining league games are Tuesday at Fred T. Foard (7 p.m.) and Friday at home against Watauga (7 p.m.).

Burns is in sixth place in the South Mountain Athletic 2A-3A at 6-6 (7-11 overall) and has four conference games to go, against Shelby (away), Draughn (home), Crest (away) and R-S Central (home).
