MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – East Lincoln High’s baseball team is heading home on a positive note after hammering Independence (Columbus, Ohio) 14-0 on Thursday in the Ripken Experience.

The Mustangs (14-6), who come home need one win to take the Southern District 7 Athletic 2A regular-season title outright, went 2-2 in the Ripken.

East Lincoln beat Holley (N.Y.) 16-2 in its Ripken opener, then fell on back-to-back days to St. Vincent-St. Mary (Ohio) 5-1 and to Liverpool (N.Y.) 9-2 on Wednesday.

The Mustangs had already clinched at least a share of an SD-7 2A title before they headed to the beach.

They have three games this week – at home Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Maiden, at home Wednesday against North Mecklenburg at 7 p.m. and Friday at West Lincoln at 7 p.m.

West Caldwell, after beating East Lincoln 4-2 on the road on March 13, is the only league team that could win out and share the crown with the Mustangs if they drop their last two conference games.

West Caldwell’s final two SD-7 2A games are Tuesday at home against Lincolnton and Friday at Bunker Hill.
