NEWTON – League-leading East Lincoln High stayed atop the Southern District 7 Athletic 2A baseball standings with an 11-0, five-inning romp past host Newton-Conover on Tuesday night.

The Mustangs (12-3, 10-1) scored three runs in the fourth inning and five in the fifth to shorten the game, and other league results Tuesday handed them no worse than a share of the conference title.

Newton-Conover (2-9, 3-12), in last place in the league, had two hits and made five errors as it missed an opportunity to win back-to-back games for the first time this season.

East Lincoln’s win widens its lead in the conference race. The league plays a 14-game schedule, and the Mustangs are three games up on second-place West Caldwell (7-4) after West Lincoln beat the Warriors 8-4 on Tuesday night.

East Lincoln is scheduled to play a league game Friday at 7 p.m. at home against West Caldwell, and a win that night by the Mustangs would wrap up an outright conference championship.

One game separates West Caldwell from Bunker Hill and Maiden, who share third place, and those latter two are a game up on Lincolnton and West Lincoln, who share fifth place.
