MORGANTON – Burke County rivals Freedom and Patton tied 1-1 on Friday night in Northwestern 3A-4A high school girls’ soccer.
After a scoreless first half, Freedom freshman Riley Carswell – on an assist by Josie Beam – scored for a 1-0 lead.
Late in the match, Patton scored on a penalty kick by Molly Messenheimer for a 1-all tie.
Neither team scored through two 10-minute overtimes.
Freedom outshot Patton 14-11 and Patton had a 9-7 edge in corner kicks.
The tie leaves Freedom 1-10-1 an in seventh place in the league and Patton, in last place, is 0-11-1 in the conference.
The Northwestern 3A-4A plays a 14-match schedule.
Freedom’s final two league matches are at Fred T. Foard at 6 p.m. on Tuesday and at Hickory on Thursday. The Patriots’ regular-season finale is Friday at 6 p.m. at the Catawba River Soccer Complex, a non-league match with East Burke.
Patton has two league matches to go, at Hickory at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday and South Caldwell at Patton on Friday at 6 p.m.
