HUDSON – South Caldwell High ran its win streak to three games and stayed in the thick of the race for a Northwestern 3A-4A baseball title on Wednesday night, downing visiting St. Stephens 7-3.

The Spartans (12-2-1, 9-2) stayed on the heels of conference-leading Fred T. Foard, a 3-2 winner on Wednesday over Hickory, with three league games to go. Foard is 11-1 after winning its seventh straight game.

The victory also helped South Caldwell stay solidly in second place, with third-place Hickory’s loss dropping the Red Tornadoes two games behind the Spartans in the standings.

South Caldwell has a makeup league game on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Hibriten.

St. Stephens (6-11, 4-8) is headed to the Easter Classic at the Legion Fairgrounds Field as the No. 6 seed. The Indians play third-seeded Alexander Central in the tournament opener on Monday at 11 a.m.
