NEWTON – Fred T. Foard High’s win streak will be seven straight heading into next week’s Easter Classic after the Tigers nipped visiting Hickory 3-2 on Wednesday night in a Northwestern 3A-4A baseball game.
Foard (12-3-1, 11-1) stayed 1 ½ games in front of second-place South Caldwell, a 7-3 home winner Wednesday over St. Stephens, by winning.
The Northwestern 3A-4A teams play a 14-game schedule.
The loss left Hickory (10-8, 7-4) in third place by one game over Hibriten.
Foard is the top seed for the annual Easter tournament at the Legion Fairgrounds Field in Newton. The Tigers play eighth-seeded Newton-Conover in a first round game on Monday at 4 p.m.
Hickory is the No. 5 seed at the Classic with its first game on Monday at 6:30 p.m. against Hibriten.
