NCHSAA STATE AWARD WINNERS: Former Lenoir-Rhyne football player named top male coach

CHAPEL HILL – A former Lenoir-Rhyne University football player was among those honored with state awards by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) during the week.

Reggie Lucas — who played defensive back for the Bears and now teaches health and physical education and is head football coach at Wake Forest-Rolesville High — won the Harvey Reid Male Coach of the Year.

Lucas became head football coach at his alma mater in 2009 and his teams have gone 102-15 with four conference titles, four East titles and a state title in 2016.

The state awards are from the NCHSAA and the North Carolina Athlete Directiors Association (NCADA). They are presented annually to individuals “who have contributed the most to high school athletics”.

DORIS HOWARD FEMALE COACH OF THE YEAR: Liz Gary, head track and field coach at Southeast Raleigh.

DAVE HARRIS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR OF THE YEAR: Cory Crossen, athletic director at Plymouth.

BOB DEATON PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR: Doris Sellers, principal at Asheville Reynolds.

BOB McRAE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE YEARL Stan Williams, superintendent of Harnett County Schools.

TIM STEVENS MEDIA REPRESENTATIVE OF THE YEAR: Owen Hassell, The Daily Advance (Elizabeth City), who recently became sports editor of The Wilmington Star News.

ELTON HAWLEY ATHLETIC TRAINER/MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR: T’Keyah Henry, LAT, ATC; Eastern Guilford.
