NCHSAA: Names ‘Eight Who Made a Difference’ award winners

CHAPEL HILL – The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) selected its “Eight Who Make a Difference” award winner during the week.

The awards honor the late Homer Thompson, a coach at Winston-Salem Parkland High and a member of the NCHSAA’s Hall of Fame.

Coaches are considered on a basic of providing exemplary sportsmanship. They’re selected by virtue of their commitment to sportsmanship and leadership, two areas that Thompson is best remembered for.

Most schools in the immediate area are in Region 7, where this year’s winner is Ed Martin, soccer coach at North Wilkes.

This year’s winner by region (there are eight in the state)

Region 1: Amanda Morris, volleyball and track and field coach at North Pitt.

Region 2: Bill Mercier, cross country and track and field coach at Trask.

Region 3: Chris Davis, head basketball coach at Raleigh Millbrook.

Region 4: Bill Sochovka, head football coach at Pine Forest.

Region 5: Richard Herman, football, wrestling and girls’ soccer coach at Thomasville.

Region 6: Jamey Harlow, cheerleading coach at Parkwood.

Region 7: Ed Martin, soccer coach at North Wilkes.

Region 8: Mark Cook, baseball and football coach at Hendersonville.
