HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS SOCCER ROUNDUP: Hickory wins, holds on to conference lead

Hickory High stayed atop the Northwestern 3A-4A girls’ soccer standings on Friday night with a 4-2 home victory over Hibriten.

The victory left the Red Tornadoes 10-2-0 in league matches and one up on second-place (and idle) Fred T. Foard (9-3-0).

Hickory has two league matches left, at home against Patton on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and at home next Thursday against Freedom.

Hibriten’s final two league contests are at South Caldwell on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. and on Thursday at home against St. Stephens at 6 p.m.

Watauga 4, South Caldwell 2: The Pioneers edged the Spartans in Hudson, improving to 8-2-2 in the Northwestern 3A-4A (third place) and leaving the Spartans at 6-6-0 in the league.

Watauga is at St. Stephens on Tuesday and at home on Thursday against Foard.

South Caldwell on Tuesday plays at home against Hibriten and then meets Patton on the road next Friday.

SD-7 2A

Newton-Conover 6, Bunker Hill 0: The Red Devils won a home, staying atop the Southern District 7 2A standings.

Newton-Conover, 10-1-1 in league matches, plays at West Caldwell on Tuesday and at home against Maiden on Thursday.

Bunker Hill meets Maiden on the road Tuesday and goes to West Lincoln on Thursday.

Bandys 1, West Lincoln 0: The Trojans won on the road, improving their league record to 3-8-1.

West Lincoln dropped to 2-10-0 in the conference.

Bandys visits East Lincoln on Tuesday and is at home Thursday against West Caldwell.

West Lincoln travels to Lincolnton on Tuesday and entertains Bunker Hill on Thursday.

NORTH PIEDMONT 3A-4A

West Iredell 5, Alexander Central 0: At West Iredell, the Warriors shutout the Cougars.

West Iredell improved to 5-6-1 in the conference and the Cougars are 3-9-0.

The regular season closes next week with Lake Norman at West Iredell and Alexander Central at South Iredell on Tuesday and West Iredell at South Iredell and North Iredell at Alexander Central on Thursday.
