WOMEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: Bears go for 10th win of the season on Saturday

HICKORY – Lenoir-Rhyne University goes for its 10th women’s soccer victory of the season on Saturday, playing a 1 p.m. conference match on the road against Anderson, S.C.

The Bears improved to 9-5-1 overall in their most recent match – an 8-0 home victory over Shaw University – with their highest-scoring match since a nine-goal match in Oct. 2015 over Mars Hill.

LRU scored in the first two minutes, 23 seconds against Shaw and had a 2-0 lead by the 5:18 mark of the opening half.

Abbie Brown had her second hat trick of the season, scoring three times in 48:40. Two of her goals came in the first half and she got her 14th of the season early in the second half.

Aqsa Mushtaq added two goals and an assist for the Bears and Christina Shimshock recorded two assists.

Freshman Lauren Siebold also scored for LRU with her first career goal in the 81st minute.

Loren Sterling was in goal for nearly 75 minutes for the Bears and Alex Werve played the final 15 ½ minutes. Before exiting, Sterling had played every minute in goal for LRU this season.

LRU honored its seniors — Brown, Sterling, Claire Neibergall, Erin McGarel and Taylor Rios – before the match.
