WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Lenoir-Rhyne collects Sealey’s first win as head coach

HICKORY – Lenoir-Rhyne University’s women won their first game of the season — handing new head coach Cameron Sealey her first career win – with a 90-79 home basketball victory on Saturday over Mount Olive.

The Bears (1-1) had five players in double figures at Shuford Gym, led by senior guard Justyce Swango’s 24 points. She also had nine assists.

Junior guard Kendall Toineeta added 17 points and junior forward Madi Suddreth scored 15 points for the Bears.

Kennedy Weigt, a freshman, came off the bench to hit four 3-pointers and score 12 points for LRU, which broke the game open with a 31-point third quarter.

The Bears led by as many as 34 points (75-41) with eight minutes, 24 seconds left to play.

Felecity Havens scored 41 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Mount Olive.

LRU had 22 points for its reserves and hit a dozen 3-pointers.

The game was part of the South Atlantic Conference/Conference Carolinas Tip-Off Classic.

LRU plays its next game on Monday at 6 p.m. against Chowan.
