NEWTON – Fred T. Foard High star Abby Settlemyre has signed to play college softball at North Carolina.

Settlemyre hit. 714 last season with three home runs, seven doubles and two triples and stole 26 bases for the Tigers as a junior. She also drove in 18 runs, walked 15 times, had 45 hits and scored 44 runs.

The Tigers went 15-8 a year ago, including 11-3 in the Northwestern 3A-4A to finish second behind South Caldwell and advance to the state playoffs.

Foard beat Central Davidson in the opening round of the 3A bracket before falling 6-4 in the second round to West Iredell.

North Carolina is coming off a 40-21 season that included going 14-9 and tying for third place in the ACC. UNC advanced to an NCAA Regional last season.
