COLLEGE SOFTBALL: Lenoir-Rhyne win streak at 8 after sweep of Wingate

WINGATE – The wins keep piling up for the Lenoir-Rhyne University’s softball team, two more coming on Wednesday in a doubleheader sweep on the road over Wingate, 4-0 and 4-3.

The Bears (34-5, 11-1) ran their win streak to eight games and left the Bulldogs at 13-23 overall and 3-7 in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC).

LRU is ranked No. 12 in NCAA Division II and next plays on Saturday at home, a doubleheader on Senior Day, against Mars Hill. First pitch is scheduled at 2 p.m.

The Bears are 32-2 in their last 34 games and they’re lead in the SAC race is four games.

LEONHARDT

Sophomore designated player Mackensi Swain hit a two-run home run and freshman first baseman Kylee Leonhardt added a solo shot – her eighth home run of the season — to lead the Bears.

Junior Brandi Parks improved to 16-3 and won her 12th straight decision.  She threw a six-hitter with six strikeouts and tossed her fifth shutout of the year.

Wingate’s Aubrey Reep fell to 11-9 after taking a loss.

The Bears built a 4-0 lead before the Bulldogs rallied to within a run.

Senior outfielder Christina Walker had a two-run double and drove in three runs while Leonhardt added three hits and an RBI double.

LRU had 10 hits.

Junior Emily Kenley — the reigning league player of the week (see below) — improved to 17-2 after earning a complete game win.

For Wingate, Jordan Floyd hit a solo home run in the seventh inning, and Rachel Weidner \fell to 1-8 after taking a loss.

She won Pitcher of the Week award for the SAC for the third time this season. She didn’t allow a run in 13 innings last week and had eight strikeouts and went 2-0 with wins over Coker and Anderson, S.C.

Kenley also threw her fifth shutout of the season – a two-hitter against Coker.
