COLLEGE SOFTBALL: Lenoir-Rhyne in first place heading into Wednesday’s home game

Lenoir-Rhyne University goes on the softball field on Wednesday with first place in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) on the line.

The Bears, 22-10 overall and 5-2 in the SAC after beating Mars Hill on the road twice on Saturday, play Queens at 3 p.m. at Bears Field on Wednesday.  A second game will follow.

At 5-2, LRU is a half-game in front of Lincoln Memorial and Queens, each 5-3 in the conference, and Coker is 4-3.

Mars Hill dropped to 20-11 overall and 4-4 in the conference.

The Bears have won six straight games.

LRU 10, Mars Hill 7, 9 inn. (Saturday)

The Bears rallied after trailing 4-1 through three innings.

A two-out rally in the fifth inning featured a game-tying home run by freshman Leanna Sherrill of LRU.

Mars Hill regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning before Mackensi Swain’s two-run single put the Bears back in front, 6-5.

LRU went ahead 7-6 in extra innings on a sacrifice fly by Sherrill in the eighth inning, and Mars Hill scored in the bottom of the inning for a 7-all tie.

The Bears had three hits and scored three runs in the ninth inning with Macie Gibson’s run-scoring single the eventual game-winner. Erin Boone also drove in a run in the inning, as did Talon LaClair.

Brandi Parks picked up her second win of the day, reaching 16, and she leads the SAC in wins.

LRU 7, Mars Hill 1 (Saturday)

For the second time in three games, Savannah Moorefield and Boone hit back-to-back home runs for LRU.

In the top of the third inning with the Bears down 1-0, Moorefield went deep, followed by Boone. Boone broke the all-time record for runs scored with her solo blast (202, passing a mark set by by Taylor Queen in 2008).

LaClair added an RBI double to score Moorefield in the fifth inning to give the Bears a 3-1 advantage.

Brandi Parks tossed a complete game and struck out four.

LaClair’s third double of the game came in the seventh inning, scoring two runs, and the next batter, Kylee Leonhardt, crushed a 2-run bomb for her fourth home run of the year.

LaClair went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Moorefield scored three times and added a stolen base and Swain walked twice.
