HICKORY – The Hickory Crawdads crushed Lenoir-Rhyne University on Monday night, winning 16-1 in an exhibition baseball game at L.P. Frans Stadium after collecting 18 hits and 14 strikeouts.
Catcher Sam Huff hit a three-run home run, going 2-for-3 after coming off the bench, and Miguel Aparicio had three hits and drove in three runs for the Crawdads.
Pedro Gonzalez added three singles and a double and nine Crawdads had at least one RBI and 11 scored one or more runs.
Hickory used nine pitchers, each working one inning, and right-hander Jake Latz struck out two in a starting role.
LRU, 16-20 this season, was held to five singles.
The Crawdads begin their South Atlantic League (SAL) scheduled on Thursday at Lakewood, N.J., and start a four-game series there.
Hickory plays at Greensboro for three games after leaving Lakewood.
The Crawdads’ home opener is April 11 against Kannapolis with gates opening at 6 p.m. at L.P. Frans Stadium the first pitch at 7 p.m.
