COLLEGE SOFTBALL: Bears sweep Belmont Abbey as Hollar reaches 800 career wins

HICKORY – Lenoir-Rhyne University softball head coach Shena Hollar reached 800 career wins on Tuesday as the Bears beat visiting Belmont Abbey twice.

LRU, ranked No. 14 in NCAA Division II, nipped the Crusaders 4-3 and then 8-0 to sweep a non-conference doubleheader. Hollar earned 45 victories as head coach at Newberry, S.C., and now has 755 wins as LRU’s head coach. She is in her 21st season as a college head coach.

LRU is now 8-0 at home this season and 13-4 overall while Belmont Abbey dropped to 6-12.

The Bears’ next game is Saturday at 1 p.m. at Francis Marion.

LRU junior outfielder Erin Boone scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 3-all tie.

The Bears were led by senior shortstop Madison Carter with two hits and an RBI, and junior Brandi Parks (5-3) went the distance for the victory.  Parks allowed just one earned run and struck out seven.

For Belmont Abbey, Melissa Neyhouse and Kaitlin Moore drove in runs while Chace Helms (3-4) took the loss.

Senior catcher Mackenzie Cates had two run-scoring doubles as the Bears run-ruled the Crusaders.

Freshman first baseman Kylee Leonhardt scored twice while junior Emily Kenley (7-1) threw a four-hit shutout.

Belmont Abbey’s Annabeth Watkins fell to 2-6 after taking the setback.
