COLLEGE BASEBALL: Belmont Abbey pounds Lenoir-Rhyne, wins 11th straight

HICKORY – Belmont Abbey scored a dozen runs over the first three innings on Tuesday, riding that to a 19-3 baseball victory over Lenoir-Rhyne University at Bears Field.

The Crusaders (16-2), ranked No. 11 on NCAA Division II, ran their win streak to 11 games and dealt the Bears (12-6) their fourth loss in six games.

Belmont Abbey’s early onslaught was led by Colin Rosenbaum, who hit a grand slam in the third inning and finished with six RBIs.

The Crusaders’ Kevin Elefante added a three-run home run while Griffin Baker (1-0) was credited with the victory.

For LRU, junior catcher Zack Shoemaker and junior pinch-hitter Hunter Jackson drove in runs while junior Clayton Jeffries (1-1) was the losing pitcher.

LRU, rated No. 10 in the Southeast Regional, next plays on Saturday at Francis Marion in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. in Florence, S.C.
