WOMEN’S COLLEGE GOLF: Bears win tourney behind individual title by Hartsell

FLEMING ISLAND, Fla. – Sparked by an individual title by junior Abbey Hartsell, the Lenoir-Rhyne University women’s golf team won the Lincoln Memorial Spring Kickoff Women’s Golf Intercollegiate tournament on Tuesday.

Playing at the Fleming Island Golf Club, the Bears shot a 33-over par 601 to nip Tusculum by two strokes.

Hartsell, a college All-American who was a golf star in high school at Alexander Central, closed a 2-under par 140 to win an individual title.

She led the Bears to their second victory this season as LRU also won the Patsy Rendleman Invitational last October in Salisbury.

Hartsell, last year’s South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Women’s Golfer of the Year won by six strokes in Florida. She has three tournament wins in her career.

Also for LRU, sophomore Ainee O’Connor tied for second with a 4-over par 146 on her way to all-tournament honors.

LRU next competes in the Low Country Invitational on Monday and Tuesday in Bluffton, S.C., with Wingate serving as the tournament host.
