COLLEGE SPORTS: LRU statement on lawsuit that alleges student-athletes involved

HICKORY – The following is a statement released to local media on Tuesday by Angela Reiter, director of marketing and communications at Lenoir-Rhyne University, regarding a published report of a lawsuit that has been filed against the school.

The published report said the suit asks for $200,000 and alleges LRU mishandled a sexual assault claim in January 2015 that was made by a former female student-athlete who attended the school and who participated in track and field.

The report also said the lawsuit listed the alleged attacker as a male student-athlete who participated in track and field and as a scholarship football player.

The school’s statement in its entirety:

The safety and well-being of our students, faculty and staff is of the utmost importance to Lenoir-Rhyne University. The University has absolutely no tolerance for sexual misconduct of any kind. Lenoir-Rhyne has comprehensive policies that strictly prohibit sexual misconduct, detailed procedures for investigating and adjudicating any alleged incidents of sexual misconduct and well developed programs of education for its faculty, staff and students regarding sexual misconduct awareness and prevention.

Lenoir-Rhyne University does not and will not provide statements regarding confidential matters involving students, faculty or staff. In addition, the University does not make statements regarding pending or active litigation.
