WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Red Hawks (22-5) have ‘Sophomore Night’ on Thursday

HICKORY – Catawba Valley Community College’s women are heading into their final home basketball game of the regular season on Thursday fresh off a 103-38 victory.

The Red Hawks drilled visiting Johnston Community College by 65 points on Monday night, setting up Thursday’s 5 p.m. game at the Tarlton Complex against Lenoir Community College.

It will be “Sophomore Night” at CVCC and admission is free.

Shaniya Lester paced the Red Hawks (22-5, 17-2 Region X), scoring a team-high 21 points in Monday’s victory. She was one of six CVCC players in double figures – the others were Zharia Brown (17 points), Tory Agrusa (17 points), Tanisha Wall (15 points) and Nikkyana McCaskill (12 points).

The 100-point performance was the Red Hawks’ fifth this season and second in three games.

CVCC pulled ahead 45-16 by halftime, led by nine first-half points from Lester.

The Red Hawks scored 33 points in the third quarter — the second-highest scoring output in a quarter this season.

McCaskill’s layup with one minute, 35 seconds to play helped put CVCC over the century mark.

Ariana Huskey paced the Jaguars (9-17, 4-16) with 11 points, while Tacoya Allen added nine points.
