COLLEGE SOFTBALL: Bears’ Hollar can get 800th LRU win on Wednesday

HICKORY – Lenoir-Rhyne University inched closer to another milestone win for head softball coach Shena Hollar of Sunday, splitting a home doubleheader against Francis Marion.

The Bears won the first game 4-1 – moving Hollar to 799  wins as head coach at LRU – and Francis Marion won the second game 8-4.

LRU will be at home for a doubleheader on Wednesday at 3 p.m. against King.

The Bears are 12-7 and Francis Marion is 16-7.

LRU’s home doubleheader against Augusta on Saturday was postponed by rain.

Talon LaClair hit a home run and the Bears added a three-run third inning as they got Hollar win No. 799 as Bears head coach.

LaClair went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and drove in two runs while Kylee Leonhardt went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Macie Gibson added two hits and Erin Boone provided an RBI.

The Bears limited the Patriots to five hits.

Brandi Parks threw a complete game for LRU, improving to 8-4, after she gave up one unearned run and struck out five.

The Patriots had one run in each of the first three innings and four in the fourth inning for a big early lead.

LRU scored three runs in the fifth inning.

Savannah Moorefield and LaClair led the Bears, combining for five hits, two runs and two RBIs.

Catcher Chelsea Welty and outfielder Danielle Karacson provided Francis Marion with four hits and five RBIs.

Jancia Hemingway earned a win for the Patriots, throwing a complete game. She gave up four runs, walked seven and struck out three and had two hits and drove in a run.

Kimberly Blair took the loss for the Bears, working 2 1/3 innings and giving up two earned runs. Parks came back to work the final four innings.

Parks pitched 11 innings on Sunday, giving up nine hits, three earned runs while striking out six and walking four.
