MEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE: Lenoir-Rhyne wins league opener behind Buduo

WINGATE – Joe Buduo scored four times Saturday, leading Lenoir-Rhyne University past Wingate 13-11 to open the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) men’s lacrosse schedule for both schools.

LRU (7-1, 1-0) led 8-7 at the half and 10-8 heading into the final quarter and won to leave the Bulldogs at 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the SAC.

The Bears, ranked No. 6 in NCAA Division II, also got two goals each by Ben Corrigan, Chris Britton, Myles Moffat and Eric Dickinson.

Buduo led LRU with three assists and Corrigan had two.

Wingate’s Conor Gronbach scored four times and Jeremy Sullivan added two goals. Josh Ferentinos’ three assists led the Bulldogs.

Wingate had 26 ground balls – five by Jacob Ormerod – to 22 for the Bears, led by seven from Shane Gottberg.

The Bulldogs had a 34-24 edge in shots and each team took 21 shots on goal.

LRU had 17 turnovers, four more than Wingate.

Ryan Crompton was in goal for the Bears, making 10 saves, and Ormerod had 13 saves in goal for the Bulldogs.

LRU’s next match is next Sunday at 3 p.m., a conference match at Tusculum.
