COLLEGE BASEBALL: Bears come from behind in each game, sweep doubleheader

HICKORY – Coming from behind in both games, Lenoir-Rhyne University swept a home doubleheader on Saturday over Newberry at Bears Field.

The Bears, beaten on Friday night by Newberry, won 7-4 and 6-4 to win their third straight weekend series. They are 17-8 overall and 6-3 in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC).

Newberry (11-11, 4-5) had leads of 4-2 in both games before LRU rallied to win.

The next game for the Bears is non-league with a 4 p.m. start on the road Wednesday against Young Harris (Ga.).

LRU 7, Newberry 4

Junior outfielder Justin Dean broke a 4-all tie with the game-winning, two-run double in the eighth inning while junior first baseman Alex Reynolds and red-shirt freshman third baseman Will Jones each added two RBIs.

Reynolds had three hits for LRU.

Tyler White hit a three-run home run for Newberry, but Hunter Hill (0-2) suffered a loss for the Wolves.

Junior Kevin LaRosa (1-1) earned a win in relief while senior Landon Whitson gained his fourth save of the season.

LRU 6, Newberry 4

Junior outfielder Aaron Stamper tied it at 4 with a solo home run before sophomore shortstop Corbin Watson delivered a game-winning RBI single – both in the fifth inning – to help the Bears complete the sweep.

Junior designated hitter Clayton Jeffries drove in two runs while sophomore John Grigg improved to 4-0 after earning a win.  Whitson pitched a scoreless seventh inning for his fifth save this spring.

For the Wolves, Colin Allman drove in three runs but Mike DeLee fell to 1-3 after taking the loss.
