WOMEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE: Elmore scores 7 goals as Bears topple Wingate

WINGATE – Scoring nine second-half goals, Lenoir-Rhyne University’s women downed Wingate on the road 15-8 on Saturday with Rachel Elmore scoring seven goals to lead the way.

Gabby Sousa added four goals for the Bears (2-4, 2-0 South Atlantic Conference), who led 6-5 at halftime, and Cathleen Gaffney had three assists for LRU.

Wingate’s Kendall Wells scored three times, and Nina Cifolilli and Megan Amrein each added two goals for the Bulldogs (1-6, 0-1).

Wingate had 18 ground balls, led by five from Casey Roux, and LRU had 15 with Ines Flueck’s four topping the Bears.

The Bulldogs forced LRU into nine turnovers and Wingate made five.

Wingate outshot the Bears 32-26, and each team had 19 shots on goal.

Flueck was in goal for LRU, making 11 saves, and Arion Pierre made a dozen saves for Wingate.

LRU’s next match is Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Tampa (Fla.).
