MEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE: Lenoir-Rhyne stuns top-ranked Limestone

GAFFNEY, S.C. – The biggest victory in program history for Lenoir-Rhyne University’s men lacrosse team came Saturday when the visiting Bears upended defending NCAA Division II champion Limestone. 17-13.

LRU (2-0), ranked No. 7 in NCAA Division II, got five goals each by freshman attacker Myles Moffat and sophomore midfielder Eric Dickinson, with Dickinson adding four assists in the victory.

The Bears were ahead 10-5 at halftime and maintained at least a three-goal lead the rest of the way.

LRU had a 52-46 edge in shots taken.

The match was tied at 2 when redshirt freshman midfielder Chris Britton scored back-to-back goals for the Bears, giving them the lead for good. He finished with three goals.

Brendan P. Smith led the Saints (0-1) with four goals.

In goal, Ryan Crompton of LRU made 13 saves and Coke Aikens had 15 saves for Limestone.

Limestone has won the NCAA Division II title in three of the previous four seasons.

Saturday’s win was LRU’s first over the Saints in seven matchups, and it was the Bears’ first win over a ranked team since April of last year when they beat ninth-ranked Belmont Abbey 9-6.

The Bears’ next match is next Sunday at 1 p.m. at home against Seton Hill (Pa.)
